Tips for the Best Juice Cleanse Experience
Juice cleanses are definitely growing in popularity, and for many, they are the first step in making the changes needed for a healthier lifestyle. If you’ve made the decision to do a cleanse, the following are a few tips to help you have the best juice cleanse experience possible.
Be Realistic
There are a wide range of juice cleanses available, from those that last two or three days all the way up to a week or longer. If this is your first foray into the world of juice cleanses, it just doesn’t make sense for you to try to tackle a seven-day detox. Your best bet is to start with a weekend or three-day juicing plan. This will help you reap the benefits, without forcing your body to adjust to something quite so drastic. Three day cleanses are the most popular, as they allow you to give your body the time it needs to heal from all those toxins, and it also helps you balance some of those cravings. That way, when the three days are up, you will likely find that some of the things you just had to have pre-cleanse don’t matter quite so much now.
Choose Your Time Wisely
You will want to pay attention to what’s going on during the time you schedule your cleanse. If there is a major food holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving, you certainly won’t want to be surrounded by all that yummy food and not be able to partake. You should also consider whether there are any special birthdays or occasions that normally revolve around going out to dinner and the like.
For the best juice cleanse experience, you’ll also want to check your work calendar and make sure you aren’t scheduled to go on a trip during the same time. You won’t want to be scrambling to find a place to get those fresh, raw juices or organic veggies in a strange new town.
Pre-Cleanse Cleansing
A juice cleanse is already going to shock your body a bit, as it has probably been quite a while since you received all those vitamins and nutrients. It’s a good idea to start cutting out some of the things that will cause the worst withdrawals during the cleanse. If you are a caffeine junkie, start lessening your consumption around three days before your start date. If sugar is a staple in your diet, you will want to switch out some of those sugary foods with healthier snacks like yogurt and fruits and vegetables. The better your eating habits when you start the cleanse, the better your experience will be overall.
Best Juice Cleanse: Potential for Side Effects
Drastically altering your diet may cause your body to go through some rather intense feelings and reactions. Knowing what to expect as part of the process will go a long way in helping you understand and deal with the side effects of juicing. Even the best juice cleanse can cause you to experience some interesting and not so fun effects, while others might not experience anything.
Some of the most common side effects include:
• Intense Hunger – You are likely cutting your calorie intake drastically, so your body will react by wanting its food back. Just hang in there, and these feelings will get less intense.
• Headaches – Many people experience headaches due to the toxins going through your body for elimination. The sudden drop in sugar intake can also cause low blood sugar, which will also result in headaches. Some of this is also due to your body going through withdrawal of sugar and caffeine.
• Fogginess – If you have low blood sugar, it can cause fuzzy thinking. This shouldn’t last long, and if it does, you should contact your doctor.
• Emotions – As your body adjusts to all those nutrients, you might become emotional, especially if you are typically an emotional eater. Consider keeping a journal or having a friend at the ready to help you through these periods.
• Increased Elimination – This is kind of the point of doing a cleanse, so expect to spend a bit more time than usual in the restroom. Your body won’t have to work as hard to digest the juices, which means they will go through your body faster.
Plan Ahead
For the best juice cleanse, make sure to plan ahead by grabbing those organic vegetables ahead of time. You should also make sure to account for the extra time you might need in the morning to make your juices and clean your equipment. If you are using prepackaged raw juices, make sure you know exactly how long they will last before they lose their nutritional benefits and taste. If you are making your own juices, make sure you have appropriate containers available so the juices don’t oxidize and lose their benefits before you even have a chance to drink them.
Adjust as Needed
While you are doing the cleanse, if you get to the point where you are absolutely unable to go any longer, have some more juice. This isn’t an exact science, and if you have to drink an extra juice or two to make it through the day, don’t sweat it – you’re still doing the cleanse with all the benefits.
Ease Back Into Things
Once you complete the cleanse, don’t plan on rushing right out and gobbling down everything in sight. You just made your body adjust to an all-liquid diet that provided tons of nourishment without requiring much work. If you throw large amounts of hard to digest foods at your system right after the cleanse, you will be miserable, and maybe even somewhat ill. Take your return to “real” eating slow, and start out with foods and drinks that are easier to digest.
If you follow these tips, you should be able to tell everyone that you had a great juice cleanse afterwards. Preparation of your mind and body will go a long way in making the experience easier to deal with, and much more enjoyable. Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back afterwards too – you just completed your first juice cleanse!
