5 Steps To Healthy Strong Nails

By on January 13, 2015

This is a great article on the 5 Steps To Healthy Strong Nails.  The Cruchy Moose does an excellent job of explaining how you can maintain healthy strong nails by adding a few things to your diet.  Check out the full article here.

I love my natural, healthy, strong nails. But they weren’t always this way. I used to have weak nails that I bit and chewed on constantly. That all changed when I started following these easy steps.

1. Grass Fed Gelatin

I love my grass fed gelatin! I started taking it to get rid of inflammation and back problems. It wasn’t long until I noticed other benefits including healthier hair, less face wrinkles, and stronger nails. My nails started growing faster than ever and are now thicker than ever. It is very important that you use a good quality, grass fed gelatin. I take about 2-3 tablespoons a day. I add it to coffee, smoothies, sprinkle on cereal, and add it to my morning detox drink. The green container does not gel, so you can add it to just about anything. The red container gels so this is the one you use for gummies and fruit snacks. It has all of the same benefits of the green container. Read more about gelatin here and here.

2. Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids have so many health benefits and healthy, strong nails is one of them. They moisturize from within and get rid of dry, brittle nails (as well as make your skin glow). Foods high in omega 3 include pasture raised meats, salmon, walnuts, beans, eggs, Brussels sprouts and spinach. My favorite sources of omega 3 are fermented cod liver oil (read about it here) and flaxseed (add ground flax seed to smoothies, add a handful to your baked goods, or sprinkle on toast, yogurt, & cereal).

3. Essential Oils

Essential oils for healthy nails are:

I make the following roll-on recipe and use it several times a week. I roll it on each nail and massage it into my nails and cuticles (just 2-3 seconds per nail is all you need). The flax oil is a good source of omega 3. I use these roll-on bottles and these essential oils.

Nail Strengthening Recipe
Instructions
  1. Add the essential oils to the roll-on bottle. These measurements are for a 10 ml bottle and the essential oils will fill up almost half of the bottle.
  2. Fill the bottle with the flax oil
  3. Shake the bottle a few times to combine
Notes
  1. Roll on your nails several times a week.
  2. Be sure to massage the oils into your nails and cuticles. 2-3 seconds per nail is plenty.

4. Drink Lots of Water

Just like omega 3 fatty acids, water moisturizes from within. When you are dehydrated, so are your nails. The result is weak, brittle nails.

5. Whole Food Supplements

The following vitamins and minerals are essential for healthy, strong nails:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin E
  • Biotin
  • Calcium
  • Zinc

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is a key part of getting all of those vitamins and minerals. But for an extra boost, I love this whole foods supplement. That 16 oz bottle is about a 1 month’s supply. The Buried Treasures Hair, Skin, & Nails supplement contains all the vitamins and minerals listed above plus much more.

Nail Maintenance

I file my fingernails several times a week using a glass nail file. I trim them with fingernail clippers as needed.
