How to Relieve Anxiety in Your Life
How to Relieve Anxiety in Your Life
Everyone experiences anxiety at some point in their life, and it is a normal part of life. However, for some, the worry and fear become nearly constant, and this can cause serious problems in all aspects of life and living. If you are struggling with anxiety, there are many ways that you can take control and start relieving your anxiety one day at a time.
What is Anxiety?
When discussing anxiety, it helps to have a better understanding of exactly what it means. There is normal anxiety, such as what you feel when going to a job interview, taking a test, or trying something new. Some people, however, suffer from serious anxiety that takes over much of their thoughts. For example, most may realize that driving around town opens them up to the possibility of an accident. For those with true anxiety, that knowledge becomes something that is absolutely going to happen, no matter what they do. When this happens, it can become debilitating, and make even everyday tasks difficult to deal with. However, there are ways to get a hold on anxiety so that it doesn’t have a hold on you.
Label Your Thoughts – When it comes to worrying, there are some thoughts that are obviously based in fact (I have to eat dinner), and others that are more what-ifs (what if I fall down the stairs). When you feel your palms getting sweaty and your heart rate increasing, label your thoughts. When you take the time to slow down your thoughts by focusing on those that are not likely to happen, your anxiety levels will decrease.
Eat Better – It’s a well known fact that stress and anxiety can seriously impact your appetite. When you make a conscious effort to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health, especially B vitamins and omega-3s, it can help your anxiety levels. Instead of reaching for that anxiety-driven sugary snack, opt for a healthy glass of fresh vegetable juice instead.
Laugh – Laughter has always been considered the best medicine, and that also applies to anxiety. When you know your stress levels are getting out of hand, take a break and read something funny. You can even head over to YouTube and watch a hilarious video – viral ones often do the trick – and beat your anxiety with some healthy laughter. You’ll also take your mind off of whatever you are focusing on, so you can get it under control.
Just Breathe – Breathing is the giver of life, but it can also help you control your anxiety. If you suffer from panic attacks, you probably notice that you feel short of breath, or even like you can’t breathe at all. The reality is, you can breathe just fine. When you start to panic, replace those shallow breaths with long, focused ones to pull yourself out of the panic.
Anxiety is never easy to deal with, but these tricks should help you start to gain control. However, if you are suffering from intense panic attacks frequently, you should check with your doctor to discuss some of the treatment options available.
