Staying Positive in a Negative World
Staying Positive in a Negative World
The world is filled with negativity. It often seems that no matter where you look, you are bombarded with horrible photos of animals being abused or neglected, innocent children being hurt or killed, the poor getting poorer, and a million other different depressing tidbits of information. All that negativity can easily become downright depressing, and for the 40 million people in the US that suffer from depression or anxiety, it already has. If you want to stay positive in a world that seems determined to bring you down, the following tips will help.
Staying Positive is a Group Effort – When you want to keep the negativity to a minimum, you have to get others involved. The people you hang out with and your family should all take part in your quest for positivity. When others hold each other accountable for negativity, it can have a major impact on changing the thoughts and words that do nothing but add even more negativity.
Counter Negative Thoughts – If you think a negative thought about yourself, make it a point to come up with at least three good things – and say them aloud. If others hear you or someone else say something negative, guess what – they have to do the same. Positive thoughts may take practice, but when you have to find the good, it can certainly show you an entirely new way of looking at yourself or a situation.
Decorate with Motivation – We’ve all seen those plaques that have short, motivational messages. Hang these throughout your home or office. If you have to, handwrite them with a marker or crayon – you can even get the kids involved. The point is, when you are surrounded by positive words, it will banish the negative.
Say Buh-Bye – If there are people in your life that seem to have only one goal in life – to bring you down – get rid of them. This can be hard, especially if you’ve been friends for a long time, but they really do bring you down. If you can’t break away from them, at least talk to them, and explain that when they start getting negative, you will just walk away. You just might find that you help them become more aware of their own negativity and start making positive changes themselves.
Control Your Day – When you wake up in the morning, you have the power to decide what kind of day you’re going to have. Tell yourself that it will be a great day, and that you WILL NOT get mad today. Repeat this to yourself as you get ready to face the day, and you will find that you really can control your state of mind.
Just Breathe – When you find negative thoughts taking over, take a few deep breathes. This will help you relax, and take your mind off of the negativity, allowing you to open your mind to the positive.
Staying positive in a negative world isn’t all that easy, but if you make a conscious effort, you’ll be amazed at the difference you can make. You control your thoughts, so keep them positive and reap the benefits!
